APPEAL FROM OUR PRESIDENT COM CHANCELLOR

Dear Friend,

I have great pleasure in writing this letter to you as the President 0f the Dakshina Bharat Hindi Prachar Sabha. The Sabha was founded by the Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi in the year 1918 to realise his dream of developing Hindi as the link language to unite the people of different regions speaking in different tongues into a single cultural entity. He sent his youngest son Devdas Gandhi as the first pracharak (teacher) of the Sabha. Mahatma Gandhi's involvement continued as the Founder- President of the Sabha till his last breath. After him, eminent national leaders such as Babu Rajendra Prasad, Lal Bahadur Shastri, lndira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi, P.V. Narasimha Rao, R. Venkataraman, B.D.Jatti and Justice Ranganath Mishra have headed and led the Sabha towards realizing Gandhiji's dream.

The Parliament declared the Sabha as an "institution of National importance', by enacting the Dakshina Bharat Hindi Prachar Sabha Act, 1964 (Act 14 of 1964). The Act enabled the Sabha to award certificates, diplomas and degrees on par with other Universities. The movement that started with one pracharak and five students has today grown into a massive institution with an extensive network of 20,000 active Pracharaks and hundreds of Professors and more than 10 lakh students appearing for various exams of the Sabha.

The Sabha plans to celebrate the centenary next year in a befitting manner. Although the achievements so far have been substantial, much more remains to be done. As a part of the centenary initiatives, the Dakshina Bharat Hindi Prachar Sabha, proposes to launch new initiatives to speed up the Hindi learning in South India, promote higher education and research in Hindi and improving the physical infrastructure.

Donations and public support have always played an important role in Sabha's development. While the Sabha has achieved financial self-sufficiency to a large extent, new initiatives proposed require substantial infusion of funds.

All donations made to the Sabha are eligible for 100% tax exemption. May I therefore appeal to you to support our efforts and also avail yourself of the benefit of the '100% tax exemption.
